Washed Ethiopian coffee is a true cult classic in the coffee world – incredibly delicious and wonderfully easy to love.
Behind Bette Buna are Hester and Dawit, who here deliver an elegant coffee that works just as well for the curious beginner as for the most dedicated coffee nerd.
Which cult classic would you bring to a deserted island? If we had to choose just one, this coffee would be it. If we’re allowed two, we’d happily pair it with a book. Märta chooses The Alchemist & Philip goes with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. What would you choose?
Flavour notes: Apricot, bergamot, milk chocolate
Since 2024, we’ve been sourcing coffee from Hester & Dawit, who run the Bette Buna farm in Sidamo, Ethiopia. Bette Buna traces its roots to the village of Taferi Kela and is built on long-term collaboration with local farmers. Their work focuses on quality, sustainability, and strengthening the community’s economic opportunities. Through coffee, Bette Buna creates jobs, trains farmers in sustainable practices, and promotes agroforestry. Each year, they distribute 350,000 climate-adapted coffee plants in the region, helping improve yields and secure a more sustainable livelihood.
This community lot (Lot 25.29) comes from smallholder farmers in Taferi Kela and is processed at Bette Buna’s washing station. Only fully ripe cherries are picked, pulped, and then fermented for 24–36 hours in concrete tanks with water – a low-oxygen environment, but not fully anaerobic. After fermentation, the coffee is washed in channels, where floating beans and defects are removed. It is then dried slowly for 8–15 days on raised, covered beds until the right moisture level is reached. The coffee rests in parchment for at least eight weeks before being hulled. Finally, it is hand-sorted for defects, then graded by size, density, and color at Bette Buna’s dry mill in Gelan, just outside Addis Ababa, before being packed for export.
